Explore Seville. A unique guide for tourists, students & expats.

According to legend, Sevilla was founded by Hercules and its origins are linked with the Tartessian civilisation. It was called Hispalis under the Romans and Isbiliya under the Moors. Its high point in its history was following the discovery of America.

Seville in Southern Spain is the Capital of Andalucia and is built on the banks of the Guadalquivir River, Seville is heir to a rich Arab legacy. Seville certainly is one of the most beloved places by visitors to Spain. Andalucia was occupied by Moors for about 800 years - it has been a cultural center long before. The fertility of this land and its favorised climate with mild winters and about 3000 hours of sun per year (if you ever have visited it in August, where temperatures can arrive to some 47°C, you may choose another time of year to visit!) made Phoenicians and Carthaginians settle here. Later came Romans, like almost to any place in Europe, and two of their emperors, Trajan and Hadrian, in fact were born here.

Every street and square that makes up the historic quarter of the Capital of Andalucia (Seville) bursts with joy and bustle. This area has an interesting collection of historic buildings, many of which have been declared World Heritage Sites, and also contains colourful districts with great popular flavour, such as Triana and La Macarena.

Seville is a remarkable southern business and service centre receiving worldwide acclaim drawing in visitors from far and wide, boasting many hotels distributed all over the city allowing the visitor to discover the many attractions the city holds. Museums, arts centres, theme parks, cinemas, theatres, and banquet halls are just a taste of what Seville can offer.

Take time and take life easy (as Andalucians do) because Seville also has numerous pubs and bars so take time out from sight seeing to visit these Gastronomic delights, to witness how the Andalucians carry out: the "tapeo", those typical "small spanish dishes". When you visit this city, you are in the very heart of Andalucian culture, the center of bullfighting and Flamenco music.

A great excuse (if you need one!) for a visit to Seville is to celebrate their festivals which occur all year round. The celebrations of Easter Week and Feria de Abril (the April Fair) are of particular interest and their festivals have been declared of National Tourist Interest. But Seville's appeal does not end there, as the city is also the starting point for the many cultural routes the province offers, such as the Roman Bética Route or the Washington Irving route.

The visitor will also discover the immense natural wealth of this region, which sits halfway between two continents, in natural treasures such as the Doñana Nature Reserve in Seville, declared a World Heritage Site and Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO, and the Sierra Norte Nature Reserve. They will be the ideal setting for practising outdoor sports, including hiking, horse riding, and cycling routes. If, on the other hand, golf is your sport of choice, then you will be glad to know that Seville has four excellent golf courses in its vicinity.
